A diplomatic source in Washington said, "Pompeo was informed of the terms to be agreed on during the inter-Korean summit and became very angry that he was not consulted in advance on issues that could have a major impact on the U.S".

Kang's proposal was met with disapproval from conservatives in the country as well as U.S. President Donald Trump.

The president doubled-down on the comment Wednesday by saying the maximum pressure campaign will continue until North Korea fully denuclearizes. There has been occasional bloodshed ever since - the 2010 attack on the warship was followed months later by North Korea's shelling of a South Korean border island that killed four and gutted homes. "They do nothing without our approval", Trump told reporters, when asked about her comments.

However, if they were lifted, by allowing cross-border barter trade - in which goods, but no actual currency crosses borders - North-South trade could feasibly resume without violating worldwide sanctions. "As there are many (bilateral) sanctions overlapping the United Nations ones, it won't necessarily mean the substantive lifting (of sanctions on the North)".

Regarding Pompeo's reaction, Foreign Ministry official said that Pompeo maintained a "polite" tone during his talks with Kang, and the matter was closely discussed between South Korea and the United States militaries. They said the North Korean leader appeared simply to be repackaging and dragging out past pledges. "While there is still a long way to go and much work to do, we can now see a path to where we'll achieve the ultimate goal which is the full and final verified denuclearization of North Korea", Pompeo told reporters at the White House.

In a rare sign of discord between Seoul and Washington, Kang said on Wednesday that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had expressed "discontent" with an inter-Korean military pact reached during a summit last month. North and South Korea sent a united team of athletes to compete in some sports at the Asian Games in August, after staging basketball matches in July between Team Peace and Team Prosperity, each mixing both countries' players.

Kang did not specify what Pompeo was unhappy about.

When it comes to foreign basketball superstars who have visited North Korea, one player used to tower above all others: 6-foot-7, five-time NBA champion Dennis Rodman.

Moon has mostly stayed firm on sanctions despite actively engaging with North Korea and floating the possibility of huge investments and joint economic projects in return for the North's relinquishment of its nuclear weapons.

"If the pope goes there, it will be a very big step, a qualitative step for the Korean peninsula, for its pacification", said You, who was in Rome for a meeting of bishops from around the world known as a synod. "This has nothing to do with restarting the Kaesong factory park". The decision had also deprived Kaesong residents of what had been a steady supply of water and electricity.
