Pompeo will also travel to Japan, South Korea and China from October 6-8, and will be in North Korea on Sunday local time, or Saturday in U.S. Eastern Time. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters Tuesday that the secretary expects to meet with Kim in Pyongyang.

Pompeo will open his trip on Saturday in Tokyo, where he will meet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has long championed a hard line on North Korea but recently said he was willing to meet Kim.

Earlier Tuesday, North Korea's official propaganda ministry accused the USA of "trying to subdue" it through sanctions, indicating that the Kim regime could see lifting such sanctions as a key bargaining chip in any talks over the future of North Korea's nuclear program.

Still, Trump expressed hope that a deal ultimately could be reached with North Korea.
