Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have interviewed one of the three women who have accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. The president said it is "scary" because "you can be (found) guilty of something you may not be guilty of".

"It is a very scary time for young men in America, where you can be guilty of something you may not be guilty of", Trump said. It really does. You could be somebody that was flawless your entire life, and somebody could accuse you of something.

At the campaign rally later, the president pretended to be a son asking his mother how to respond to such an accusation.

Ford testified that Kavanaugh groped her and attempted to remove her clothing while holding a hand over her mouth to prevent her from screaming at a house party when they were both in high school in 1982.

"And a man's life is in tatters", he said.

Ford's attorney blasted Trump following his comments at Tuesday's rally.

While many prominent public figures have seized on the latest resurgence of the #MeToo movement to send a message to women and victims of sexual assault that their voices are being heard, Trump has focused on backing up the accused.

The primary season yielded record numbers of female candidates.

Some Republicans fear pushing ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation could alienate women voters, while Democrats are seeking to capitalize on the controversy.

In his warning, Trump echoed some of his allies. Kavanaugh repeatedly has denied all such allegations against him. Or young men. Or middle-aged men. Can you imagine if I had what a mess I'd be? 'How many years ago was it?' I don't know. "Well, do you think it was - nope, it was one beer", Trump said, mocking the accuser. Kavanaugh has steadfastly denied all allegations against him, describing them as attacks by Democrats to derail his nomination.

Trump and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders have dismissed Woodward's book as a work of fiction. That is one of the very bad things that is taking place right now'.

Flake said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had completed interviews with four people. "And this is the way that can do that", Zelizer said. "My heart goes out to the fearless survivors who have the courage to come forward and share their story".

Republicans argue the Kavanaugh debate will drive enthusiasm among men and women.

A defiant Kavanaugh came out with guns blazing, insisting the assault never happened, accusing Democrats of destroying his reputation and condemning his confirmation battle as a "national disgrace".

"This is another part of their moving the goal posts, which is happening at the speed of light at this point", said Carrie Severino, chief counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative advocacy group. "And we better start as a country getting smart and getting tough".

Speaking with mock horror, McConnell summarized a recent New York Times article detailing a 1985 bar brawl allegedly involving the nominee.

But Democratic strategist Jim Manley questioned the strategy. "Only 113 people have ever served on the Supreme Court, and I believe that we must do our level best to protect its sanctity". "They have gone loco", he told supporters.
