I have no problem with Pogba - Jose Mourinho

As revealed by ESPN FC, Mourinho told Pogba of his decision on Tuesday, just a day after the £89.3 million midfielder had spoken out to demand that United deploy more adventurous, attacking tactics at Old Trafford.

Mourinho was left red-faced amid fresh talk of a rift with Paul Pogba as Manchester United crashed to a shock penalty shoot-out defeat against Frank Lampard's Derby in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Asked about those reports, Mourinho told Sky Sports: "The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fall-out, no problems at all".

Antonio Valencia is United's club captain.

It's not just a single player, everyone is a part of the team.

It was reported by ESPN's Rob Dawson prior to the match that Mourinho informed both the Frenchman and his teammates of his decision at the club's Carrington training ground.

"We practice penalties and we see it in training and when we get past the sixth penalty I know we're in trouble with Bailly and Jones."

Manager Jose Mourinho had used his programme notes to issue a warning to his players following the weekend draw with Wolves that "95 percent isn't enough when others give 101 percent". To strip him of the responsibility seems petty, and won't help Pogba play any better.

The Rams prevailed on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time, but the overriding story was Mourinho stripping Pogba of the vice captaincy and telling the World Cup victor he will never captain the club again.

Lampard, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea, said: "I was so honoured to be on the touchline with a man who affected my career so much".

The 25-year-old was dispossessed in the move that led to Joao Moutinho's equaliser.

He is not cajoling consistent performances out of the team and that, whatever you might think of Pogba, is the overriding issue at Old Trafford right now. "We are here to attack", he said.

There was still time for United to haul themselves back level and set up a penalty shoot-out, with Marouane Fellaini once again coming to the rescue of his below-par side with a trademark header of his own.
