A mockup of the Crew Dragon spacecraft is displayed during a media tour of SpaceX headquarters and rocket factory in Hawthorne, California.

"That is the intent of BFR, to make people excited about the future", said Musk, referring to the yet-to-be-built spaceship. He said he wanted the artists "to see the moon up close, and the earth in full view, and create work to reflect their experience".

Can Elon Musk and SpaceX pull this off?

He will be the first person to travel to the moon since the United States' Apollo missions ended in 1972.

If all goes according to plan, Maezawa and his artist crew may become the first people to fly SpaceX's Big Falcon Rocket - a new launch system that's being created to colonize Mars - and also the first-ever private lunar tourist in history.

"I hope that this project will inspire the dreamer within each of us", Maezawa wrote on the website for the project, #DearMoon.

The BFS is said to be able to hold 100 passengers.

Elon Musk reveals the first passenger SpaceX will send around the moon
The price for a SpaceX lunar mission is likely hefty, though Musk pointed out, "It's going to be free for the artists". Musk plans to launch an unmanned cargo mission in 2022, with hopes of sending humans to Mars in 2024.

They traveled to the City Stay Hotel in Bow Road, East London, where they stayed on Friday, 2 March, and Saturday, 3 March. They again were recorded in the centre of town an hour later and were at the station by 1.50pm, two hours after arriving.

The new SpaceX strategy is to still fly around the moon without landing, but use an even bigger rocket still in development that has its own dedicated passenger ship.

Musk introduced Yusaku Maezawa, founder of the worldwide custom-fit clothing company Zozo and an avid art collector, as the one who is investing in the spaceship project in order to take the trip, possibly in 2023. The mission is slated to take flight in 2023. He said he has bought all the available seats for the BFR lunar mission and plans to invite other artists from around the world for the trip.

SpaceX said the journey would be "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of travelling to space". SpaceX plans to launch the first unmanned mission to Mars by 2022 - a goal Musk himself has described as "Ambitious", with a sight to putting the first humans on the red planet by 2024.

On Monday, Mr Musk unveiled new artist impressions of the BFR and the spaceship which will carry passengers around the Moon.

At the time, Musk said the pair approached SpaceX about sending them on a weeklong flight and paid a "significant" deposit for the trip.

They'd then launch from Earth and voyage around the moon on a trip that would take about six days.
