Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is expected to plead guilty to charges filed special counsel on conspiracy against the USA and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Regarding the Washington case, Manafort was accused of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, conspiring to launder money, and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department about the nature of his work.

The charges in Friday's filing were contained information that typically signals a deal has been reached.

So far, lawmakers have not released the details of the agreement, and added that it is unclear if Manafort will cooperate with prosecutors.

"If he's helping out Mueller, that's more bad news for Trump".

Manafort's decision could be mixed news for Trump, who tapped the consultant to serve as his campaign chairman in June 2016 as he was securing the GOP presidential nomination. Trump has raised the idea of a pardon for Manafort with White House aides and others, a source told NPR.

He volunteered that year to work for free on the Trump campaign, shepherding the candidate through the Republican National Convention before being pushed aside as questions about his influence-peddling emerged.

Manafort is due to reappear in court Friday for pre-trial proceedings stemming from charges of money laundering for Russia-linked politicians.

"It's not going to hurt him if he pleads guilty".

Rick Gates, Manafort's former business partner and the campaign's deputy chairman, pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for his cooperation, later testifying against Manafort in Virginia. The remaining five charges against Manafort will be dropped. The jury in Virginia found that Manafort hid millions of dollars he made in Ukraine to avoid paying taxes, and then lied to get loans when the political party that was paying him was ousted from power and the funding dried up. And it was Jackson (a Barack Obama appointee) who, earlier this year, removed Manafort's home detention status and ordered him jailed for tampering with witnesses.

The charges are related to Manafort's Ukrainian political consulting work.
