Djokovic and Argentine Del Potro, who advanced when Rafael Nadal retired injured from their semi-final, meet in the final on Sunday at 21:00 BST.

Two wins from being the first men's repeat champion at the U.S. Open in a decade, Rafael Nadal meets Juan Martin del Potro in one semifinal.

Nadal's stamina and famous fitness have been put to the test on the sweltering Flushing Meadows hardcourts as he has logged almost 16 hours through five matches.

"Yeah, for sure it's going to give me good confidence", Nishikori said, "even though I (don't) remember".

"But I think that is completely in the past, and now I'm having a good present, looking forward for the future".

But, yeah, I think was 2-All in the first, 15-Love, something like this in the first set, that I felt.

In 2010 he said an early goodbye in Australia at the hands of Andy Murray because of his right knee, while tendinitis again kept him from the London 2012 Olympic Games and he did not return until 2013. But no, it was not the day. It was so hard for me to keep playing at the same time that way, having too much pain. "It was not a tennis match at the end".

"One of the keys of the match will be [my] return, how well I can return, how many returns I can get back in play, but also try to have some depth in that return, and how accurately I can serve myself".

"Like thousands of other tennis players around the world I'm trying to be the best I can be".

"I've been fighting with many, many problems to get [to] this moment". But yes, he is a player who went through a lot of issues during his career, like me, too.

His third-round loss to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon in 2016 was his worst result at a major in nine years, and began a run of seven grand slam tournaments in a row, he missed last year's US Open through injury, that ran through to July this year. "I had my biggest memories on the tennis court playing on this court ... but I was a kid".

Nadal was devastated by having to pull out although he believes he hasn't suffered any long term damage.

"I waited as much as I can", Nadal said. "This time it was a little bit more aggressive with my movement", said Nadal.

"I didn't know if I will be a tennis player again or not. I know how I have to work to be better as soon as possible".

As Nadal himself noted during a news conference that closed as he began to choke up, this was the second of those defeats that involved him quitting during a grand slam match because of an injury; the other was in the fifth set of his Australian Open quarterfinal. It's about not having the chance to fight for it.

Del Porto will be facing Novak Djokovic, who defeated Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-4 6-2 to reach his eighth US Open final.

Djokovic barely played in the second half of 2017 as his ailing body demanded a lengthy hiatus and the rejuvenated Serb now appears hungrier than ever, intent on making up for lost time by claiming a second Grand Slam title of the year.

"All my career everybody said that because of my style, I will have a short career", he noted. "I know what is going on with the knee".

Ego is required to become No. 1, and to reclaim the No. 1 ranking at the age of 32. "So it will be special to me".
