Biggest single-day increase in petrol and diesel prices in Ahmedabad

The opposition parties, led by Congress have called a "Bharat bandh" protesting against high fuel prices and accusing the Modi-led government of revising excise duty on petrol and diesel twelve times leading to a sharp spike in their prices.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday announced a reduction in petrol and diesel price by Rs 2 each, in the state. They blame the government's unwillingness to cut excise duty for the high fuel prices and consumer burden. While petrol reached Rs 80.12/litre, diesel price was marked at Rs 72.83/litre on Monday.

Off late, the prices are on a northward journey for about a month now, baring a few days, when it dropped marginally.

The party has demanded that petrol and diesel should be brought under the GST, by which oil prices could drop by about Rs 15 to Rs 18. Petrol dealers said that for the last two weeks, fuel prices have been increasing continuously at least by 20 paise to 30 paise every day.

The VAT on petrol has been reduced from 30 to 26 per cent and from 22 to 18 per cent on diesel, Rajasthan Chief Minister Raje announced at a public gathering in Rawatsar in Hanumangarh district on Sunday. Mumbai has the highest Value-Added Tax of 39.12 per cent on petrol, while Telangana levies the highest Value-Added Tax of 26 per cent on diesel.
