That name is quite the mouthful, and we're not quite sure what would lead Apple to call its larger phone "Max" instead of "Plus". It will be replaced on all three models with the face-scanning FaceID that Apple introduced with the iPhone X a year ago.

Where: The event will take place at the Steve Jobs Theater, the underground auditorium on Apple's Cupertino campus. Consequently, the iPhone XS Max will still be a compact smartphone.

Others are reading the name as "iPhone Excess". There's a red model, which could be Product (RED), as Apple has previously used its red handsets to raise money to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

When it comes to individual models, the iPhone X is the leader of the pack, losing only 32% of its value since release. The most intriguing part about it - other than the fact that it shows the larger iPhone XS model we've heard so much about in the past several months - is that it apparently divulges the smartphones in gold colorway.

The earlier leaked hinted the 2018 iPhones to be called as iPhone XS (iPhone 10s) and iPhone XS Plus (iPhone 10s Plus).

Like the previous year, Apple has scheduled its hardware-centric event for September 12 this year with the tagline "Gather Round". Still, it has to remain competitive with its biggest rivals, even if most phone makers are struggling to compete at any price point in the US. Moreover, the decline in NAND memory prices (which could decline by 10% in Q3 alone) may help the company bolster profits on its higher storage tier models. It'll outsize the iPhone XS, which is said to maintain a familiar 5.8-inch screen.

Since the iPhone 6, Apple has offered two size options with the larger carrying the Plus moniker.
