As of 6pm, Tropical Storm Florence lay 900 miles east-southeast of the island, and was headed west-southwest at 8mph.

Florence's first impact to Bermuda and the US East Coast could start this weekend with large swells, potentially causing risky surf conditions and rip currents.

Both the European and American models have shifted the storm westward, rather than northerly, increasing the likelihood it will come close to or make landfall somewhere on the East Coast.

To activate the transportation waiver, Gov. Cooper also signed Executive Order No. 51, declaring a State of Emergency for the State of North Carolina on Friday.

On Saturday morning, Florence's center had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.

Florence is still not expected to be a threat to South Florida, but with potential winds of 145 miles per hour sometime Thursday, residents of the Carolinas ought to watch its movement closely over the next few days.

Meanwhile residents along the United States east coast are being warned to prepare for the possible arrival of Florence next week, with modelling showing the weakened storm could regain it's strength to a hurricane as it approaches Bermuda. On this path, Florence will track over the warm waters off the southeast USA coastline.

Though weakened to a tropical storm on Friday, Florence was expected to regain hurricane strength as it nears Bermuda over the weekend. The WFMY News 2 Weather team predicts it may get uncomfortably close to the East Coast by the middle of next week.

The winds from Tropical Storm Florence are expected to strengthen this weekend. Most of the models are now showing Florence having a direct and major impact to the East Coast in the upcoming week. The storm is moving west at 13 miles per hour.

It appears that Florence will slow down as it turns around the west end of the bubble of high pressure.

Helene is forecast to strengthen, with tropical storm conditions reaching the Cabo Verde Islands Saturday. Additional strengthening is forecast for the next couple of days and Helene is expected to become a hurricane on Sunday. Helene is expected to become more of a sea event than land event. It is pretty far south and with high pressure ridging in place over the Atlantic and Florida, should in the short and medium term be a Caribbean system.
