A spokesman for Reynolds said the star died in Jupiter, Florida, on Thursday morning after suffering a heart attack.

Stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to Reynolds. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2019.

Afterwards, Reynolds had a brief stopover in NY where he appeared in several theatrical productions before moving out west to Hollywood.

Reynolds also blamed himself for his break-up with Smokey co-star Sally Field. In 2015, Reynolds wrote a memoir titled But Enough About Me and shared that he felt that Deliverance was the best movie he'd ever been in: "It proved I could act, not only to the public but me".

It was in his Hollywood heyday that Burt boasted an impressive property portfolio, including his famous "Burt Reynolds Ranch", a private jet and a helicopter.

He then scored small parts in the late 1950s before landing a role in the New York City Center revival of "Mister Roberts" in 1957, as well as a recurring spot in the TV series "Gunsmoke".

Reynolds was nominated for an Oscar in 1998 for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights". In the 80's, Reynolds' career cooled off considerably, but the CBS sitcom Evening Shade, which ran from 1990-94, helped revive him in the public eye.

He was thus cast in his first A-title role, in John Boorman's Deliverance, one of the most popular and well received films of 1972 (several major actors, including Marlon Brando, had turned the role down before it was offered to Reynolds).

From James Bond to Hans Solo in George Lucas' 1977 blockbuster "Star Wars", Reynolds also reportedly was among Paramount Pictures' top choices to play Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 epic "The Godfather". Set in the 1970s porn industry, Anderson's film rejuvenated Reynolds career by casting him as the pragmatic, occasionally ruthless adult film director Jack Horner.

Following his tragic death, how much was the Boogie Nights star worth?

He would later call Field "the one that got away".
