The Australian then seemed to be in trouble as the five-time champion broke him for a second time in the match in game five and then served for the set at 5-4. The feet weren't moving.

But Millman is in the form of his life, having surged to the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time with a series of upsets - including that of 14th seed Fabio Fognini.

Despite the applause and gasps from the crowd, as well as his opponent, Federer appeared as cool and calm as ever as he flashed a small smile and walked back to the end of the court ready to commence play again.

Millman fought back from being down a break early in the fourth set to force a tiebreak.

The 13-times Grand Slam victor had made easy work of the opening set, breaking Sousa twice, the second time to close out set. Roger had it on a string, he was manipulating me around the court. He started that 15-minute struggle by missing 18 of his initial 20 first serves.

A tie-break was required, raising the volume on a court that had often been stunned into near silence, and incredibly it was Millman who prevailed, coming from 3-1 down and saving one set point before taking his second. But Cilic still needed a third match point to clinch it. "Sometimes, you just have to survive".

It was his first victory against a top 10 player.

Washington bids farewell to the late Sen. John McCain
The service brought to a close two days of mourning for the US senator and 2008 GOP presidential nominee in his home state. Twenty-four sitting USA senators, four former senators and other leaders were among those expected at Thursday's memorial.

Asked whether he thought during that time away about returning to the height of his powers, Djokovic replied: "I have imagined. I have prayed for that". That was the first time in tournament history that the U.S. Open created an extreme heat policy for men's matches - they can opt for a 10-minute break between the third and fourth sets - similar to what's standard on the women's tour, when there can be a delay between the second and third sets.

The other quarterfinal on the bottom half of the draw will be 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori against 2014 champion Marin Cilic or No. 10 David Goffin.

Djokovic said it used to be Andy Roddick but since the American's retirement from the sport, Aussie Nick Kyrgios was probably the next best.

Kei Nishikori will be hoping to make another deep run at his most successful grand slam event after he outclassed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-2 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open on another scorchingly hot day in NY.

The Spaniard will be at that stage for the second time at the U.S. Open, five years after her other run to that round.

"But now I'll try to stop him, so we'll see how it goes".
