The daylong public viewing of his casket was due to kick off five days of memorial tributes in Phoenix and Washington for McCain, who died on Saturday at his ranch in Cornville, Arizona, from brain cancer.

The Life of Sen. The rotunda will be open until 8 p.m. Wednesday night, but will stay open late enough to accommodate everyone in line.

Graham said he was vowing to channel the politics of the late Senate Armed Services chairman, who was often a fierce critic of Trump and the Pentagon but also a champion of using United States military might overseas, the Examiner reported. "I asked him one time, I said how do you remember their names?" "I brought my children here to show them what a real hero was".

The public viewing followed a brief ceremony for family and dignitaries led by Republican Governor Doug Ducey, who has said he would appoint McCain's immediate successor in the Senate only after McCain's burial on Sunday.

McCain's children then filed past the casket, including The View co-host Meghan McCain, who broke down and wept.

Former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said he has been with McCain all around the world and that he had better instincts on when to assert USA power than anyone else he knew. John McCain is getting so much media attention in the wake of his death on Saturday.

The building is now named after former Georgia Democratic Sen. "The best way I can honor John McCain is help my country". "America is stronger for his fierce defense of our values". "We can be proud he was our senator".

Senator Jeff Flake offered the benediction at the service. John McCain's body left the state Capitol for a second day of memorial services for the maverick politician, former prisoner of war and two-time presidential candidate. "And we can try, as he summoned us to try, to restore the Senate to its rightful place in our national political life".

One thing that was made clear by all those present at today's ceremonies. John McCain will lie in state, guarded by DPS troopers atop the Arizona state seal, for 24 hours.

"We were the ones who were privileged", said Ducey.

"To be judged by a standard of perfection is just not fair", said Russell, who describes himself as an Obama Democrat and ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 1986. "We can be proud he was OUR Senator", said KyI.

"My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can".

Thursday morning will see a procession through Phoenix on the way to a memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church, with the public invited to line the route along Interstate 17.

The main speech in tribute to McCain was to be delivered by Biden, a friend and former six-term senator from DE who was elected vice president as the running mate of McCain's rival for the White House, Barack Obama, who defeated McCain in the 2008 presidential race.
