He declined to answer any question's about the flag or Trump's response to McCain's death.

Since that momentous political defeat, Trump had, in speeches at rallies across the country, frequently mocked the thumbs-down gesture McCain used to torpedo the legislation.

Former Senator Norm Coleman, the head of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), said, "Senator McCain was a patriot and a fighter". McCain, for his part, recently slammed Trump's Helsinki meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

Even as flags remained at half-staff yesterday at the Capitol, the Washington Memorial and elsewhere, the White House flag was raised.

By 4:08, the flag once again was at half-staff, which PolitiFact again photographed.
