On Monday, Mr Schumer and Mr McConnell asked for the flags to remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of McCain's funeral on Saturday.

This move breaks with tradition in which the White House flags are generally flown at half-mast until the burial of a lawmaker and other notable personalities, and is done so in order to honor such figures.

Vietnam is remembering late Arizona Senator and war veteran John McCain for his role in normalizing relations between the two countries.

McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who ran for president in 2008 as a self-styled maverick Republican and became a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, died on Saturday.

Just after midnight on Sunday night, the flag flying above the White House was hoisted back to full staff.

The U.S. flag code calls for flags to be lowered in the event of the death of a member of Congress "on the day of death and the following day". Flying it at half-staff for an extended period of time is at the discretion of the president.

Kasich added that he ordered all public flags in OH to be lowered at half staff.

The Suns also sent out their condolences to McCain's family along with a genuine message on how the organization feels about the late senator's contributions to the nation.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days. While on the campaign trail in 2015, then-candidate Trump suggested McCain was not a war hero because he had been captured in Vietnam. McCain will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.

He will lie in state at the Arizona state capitol on Wednesday, and a funeral will take place in Phoenix on Thursday.
