The second-ranked Federer has won it an unprecedented seven times, going 7-for-7 in finals.

His reward is a Saturday evening semi-final against Federer, while the other last four clash will match former world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia against Croatia's Marin Cilic.

"I haven't played any matches on the centre court".

Mayer had a chance to force a third set, but Federer held on to win his third consecutive meeting with the Argentine as players double up in matches in the rain-delayed tournament.

Still Barty fought back and had a break point in the final game that would have levelled the score at 5-5, but Halep sealed victory with a backhand victor.

Enraged by his poor play at the outset, Djokovic slammed his racket on the court and rallied for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Milos Raonic on Friday night to reach the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open, the only ATP Masters event he has never won.

With the weather holding, organizers hoped to have the tournament on schedule by the end of the day, with matches featuring Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic still to come.

Halep was scheduled to then face Ashleigh Barty in the final match of the day, but it, too, was rescheduled for Friday morning. Halep will be trying for her second title in eight days. "It will be a challenge for me to play another final here and try to win it".

Djokovic admitted after the match that he is "very expressive of emotions", which sometimes works in his favour, and sometimes doesn't.
