Madonna is accused of delivering a self-indulgent tribute to the late Aretha Franklin during Monday night's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 60-year-old singer presented Video of the Year to Camila Cabello, and in her introduction opened up about how the Queen of Soul, who died last week, helped to launch her own career. The Aretha part of the story is that Madge loved one of her albums and warbled out an acoustic version of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman during an audition for some "French disco sensation".

Basketball player Jamal Crawford wrote: "Did Madonna make her Aretha Tribute about Madonna with a sprinkle of Aretha's name in it?" "You're probably all wondering why I'm telling you this story", she said. "Long live the queen", Twitter immediately dragged, roasted and read Madonna for filth for making the tribute about herself and her journey as a pop star - whether it was intentional or not. Rather, many believe she should have focused way less on herself and more on Aretha's life and achievements.

Madonna continued to talk about her early-career struggles, like getting robbed, and being "mistaken for a prostitute in her third floor walk-up, that was also a crack house". "I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but all I heard was her paying homage to herself". "There is a connection", she said. "Madonna has been entitled + gentrifying [black] things for a LONG time", she tweeted. Many, including myself, feared that Madonna was going to sing a song by the Queen, but fortunately, she spared us.

"I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us".

The Queen of Pop was asked to speak about the late Queen of Soul at Monday's award ceremony in NY.

Madonna stole headlines at last night's MTV VMAs (above), and not the good kind. "Very disappointing", one user wrote. She lead me to where I am today. "I'm surprised no other artists mentioned her tonight".

A few of the star's die-hard fans managed to shine a ray of light on the situation though, including one who called the tribute a "Great speech!"
