Posting on Instagram, she said: "I can't remember a day of my life without Aretha Franklin's voice and music filling up my heart with so much joy and sadness".

Franklin was cemented as a superstar in the 1960's, with classic hits such as "Respect", "Think", "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Chain of Fools" making her an icon around the world.

In her final days, Aretha Franklin received many visitors at her home, including her ex-husband Glynn Turman.

The famously strong-willed Franklin had been unwilling to yield to the ideas Columbia had for her image and marketability, so after years of lackluster efforts she moved on to Atlantic Records. "She will be missed!".

"I've got to get it together because I wanted - I did want to see her - so I decided on Monday I would go", he continued.

The singer's final public performance was last November, when she sang at an Elton John AIDS Foundation gala in NY . The iconic singer - known for hits like " Respect " - passed away at her Detroit home after a battle with cancer .
