Red alert sounded in 12 districts

An incessant downpour battered Kerala again on Wednesday, resulting in 28 more deaths and more destruction and forcing authorities to issue a red alert across the southern state.

TVS Motor Company has contributed Rs 10 million to the Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) in lieu of the distressing flood situation in Kerala.

People were air-lifted from parts of the state through the night as Kerala battles the worse floods in nearly a century.

Periyar, Chalakudy Puzha and Pampa rivers were overflowing in central Kerala, while the water level in Killiyar, Karamanayar, Vamanapuram rivers and Parvathyputhanar canal in Thiruvananthapuram district are steadily rising.

This is the second time in a week that Kochi airport has had to suspend flights. The airport is situated near the Periyar river bank.

Though initially 13 shutters of the dam were opened early by 4.30 am, three were closed and discharge through the spillway reduced to 3,480 cusecs.

A senior official with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, said the seasonal rains have killed more than 200 people in the state since May and displaced many.

Airlines including IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet have announced suspension of their operations to Kochi. However, facing the unprecedented situation, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan spoke to PM Modi on the deteriorating flood conditions in the state.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan made a televised address to the state and said that next four days were very crucial for Kerala.

Several people have vacated their homes due to landslides and land slips.

"We discussed the flood situation in the state".

The IMD has issued red alerts in all districts today and in seven districts on Thursday. "The neighbouring states have been helping us and we need their help in the future too", added the chief minister. The same is due to heavy inflow of water consequent to opening of dams. Traffic has been stopped in Kuthiaran region connecting Thrissur-Palakkad on Salem-Kochi national highway. The water level in Mullaperiyar was 142 feet as rain continued to lash the state.

The situation in Pathanamthitta district, especially Ranni and its surroundings areas, appeared to be bleak since late Wednesday evening as, local CPI-M legislator Raju Abraham, said things were turning from bad to worse and he was receiving frantic calls from his contituents in Ranni.
