In Connecticut, Democratic teacher Jahana Hayes' primary win paved the way for her to be the first black woman from the state to serve in Congress if she wins the general election in November.

A former Somali refugee won her race in Minnesota, as did a celebrated teacher in CT who could now become the state's first black Democrat in Congress.

Hallquist has sat on a number of local boards in her community. "They are not going to elect me because of the fact that I'm transgender - that's the reality". He said: "I think I'm the candidate who best represents the change we need".

Hallquist's path to victory may be hard, but the New York Times notes that with her campaign drawing national attention, she'll attract more fundraising dollars and other resources.

In 2015, "Christine made the decision, after years of holding it inside, to come out as her true self, a transgender woman, becoming the first business leader in the country to transition while in office", according to her campaign's website.

"Christine's historic victory tonight is an inspiration to LGBTQ people everywhere, and we are excited to stand behind her and the entire slate of fantastic Democratic nominees in Vermont". Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders also easily won his Democratic Senate primary, though he's expected to run in November as an independent. Exactly a week after the Kansas gubernatorial election, incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer conceded to Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

He defeated former governor Tim Pawlenty, who was hoping to regain his old job.

The first-term governor, who was elected in 2016 and is facing a primary challenge, saw his stock plummet between the first and second quarters of the year. Democrats see Trump's unpopularity as creating a chance to flip the seat, which Republicans have held since 1995.

Democrats in the state also backed Congressman Keith Ellison, a candidate who is facing accusations of domestic violence.

On Tuesday, Scott was greeted enthusiastically by a gathering of roughly 40 staff, family members and close friends at a low-key victory celebration at the Comfort Inn in Berlin.
