Zero, nada, nothing. That is how much Tottenham spent on summer transfers and, in the process, became the first club in the Premier League era not to bring anybody in during preseason.

The figures released showed that top-flight clubs spent an estimated £1.23 billion before Thursday's pre-season deadline - down £200 million from last summer's window.

In contrast to the changes in west London, Tottenham in the north of the English capital has yet to add a single signing ahead of its first season in a new 62,000-seater stadium.

Willian played a vital role in Chelsea's FA Cup win last season and though the Blues were not lucky enough to finish in top four to compete in next season's UEFA Champions League, Willian was outstanding and also dazzled at the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup and attracted interest from Barcelona while Jose Mourinho was also eyeing a reunion with the player. Harry Kane committed his future to Tottenham before heading to the World Cup and finishing as the top-scorer as England reached the semi-finals. Chelsea shattered the world record fee for a goalkeeper with an 80-million euro (£71.6 million, $92 million) swoop for Athletic Bilbao's Kepa Arrizabalaga on Wednesday to replace Belgian global Thibaut Courtois, who has joined European champions Real Madrid.

Last season's top-two teams spent nothing on Thursday. "It is not unreasonable to question if it was really the case that, alone among Europe's top clubs, Spurs could find no player who would improve their squad while our rivals strengthened theirs".

Yet Mina failed to impress in making just six appearances for Barca after joining from Palmeiras in January and the Catalan giants were keen to cash in on the 23-year-old, who cost just 11.8 million euros seven months ago. Everton has already broken its transfer record in the off season by paying Watford 40 million pounds for Richarlison, a forward who didn't even make Brazil's World Cup squad.

The Premier League's highest-spending clubs were Liverpool (£165m), Chelsea (£120m), Fulham (£105m) and Leicester City (£100m), representing around 40% of the aggregate gross player transfer expenditure by Premier League clubs.

United moved quickly to add Diogo Dalot, Lee Grant and Fred to their ranks during the summer window, but Mourinho feels that his squad has not been significantly upgraded since the end of last season.
