Starting next year, the ceremony will now be shown in what the Academy describes as "a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast".

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's board of governors approved several changes to the annual Oscars show last night during their meeting Tuesday night in which they re-elected John Bailey to a second term as president.

Starting with the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, a new Oscar will be awarded for achievement in popular film.

The Oscars has also announced that its planning an earlier date for 2020 - advising film fans to mark their calendars for February 9. The 2019 show will still run on Sunday, Feb. 24.

The nominations for next year's ceremony will be announced on January 22. It also clocked it at almost 4 hours, making it the longest show in over a decade.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you. Period. There's no need to put a "popular film" label on it. It honors the very best of all the craftspeople involved in making a film, and to suddenly deem certain categories unworthy of being part of the actual broadcast is a slap in the face.
