LeBron James speaks at a news conference after the opening ceremony for the I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, Monday, July 30, 2018.

Trump's comment sparked huge reaction on Twitter from James' backers.

'Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon.

Donald Trump has taunted National Basketball Association player LeBron James over his intelligence, claiming it "isn't easy" to make him "look smart".

Part of James' interview with Lemon was about the new school he opened up in Cleveland to help at-risk youth.

He suggested that since James no longer resides or represents a swing state in OH and has moved to the state of California which is essentially a lost cause, Trump can say what he feels.

"Who's the real dummy?"

OH governor John Kasich, a Republican like Trump, and former newscaster Dan Rather also criticized the President's tweet about James.

"I like Mike!" he wrote.

The tweet came after James said during the interview that Trump is using sports to try and "divide" the US.

The tweet was referring to an unverified story that Trump was recently angry after discovering that his wife's TV on Air Force One was set to CNN.

Lemon's questions mostly focused on James's time off the court, covering the I Promise model inspired by James's childhood search of sanctuary away from crime and violence in Akron.

As was noted on Twitter Saturday morning, Lemon and James are two successful and respected African-American men who have risen in their respective careers.

"Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!"

James has always been critical of Trump. Last year, James called Trump a "bum" for uninviting Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry to the White House. In response, James said: "I would never sit across from him". "I know the streets that they walk".

The tweet from CNN also included a reference to Melania's "Be Best" campaign, which was meant to curb cyberbullying.

"Sounds like @FLOTUS had the remote last night". We hope you both saw the incredible work of @KingJames.

"Can't believe it!" Trump tweeted in July.
