Fairfax County resident infected with West Nile Virus, health officials say

A resident in Mead has been hospitalized with a neuro-invasive form of West Nile Virus - the most serious form of the illness, according to a release from the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.

Citywide spraying continues to be effective in sharply reducing the mosquito population in Huron, more important than ever because now through the middle of August is historically the time of greatest risk of West Nile virus transmission to humans.

Those zip codes include 40212, 40213 and 40214, according to the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness.

Infection with West Nile virus is either asymptomatic (no symptoms) in around 80% of infected people, or can lead to West Nile fever or severe West Nile disease.

If you are planning to be outside enjoying this summer weekend, be aware, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus have been detected in Kent County. People with weak immune systems or those older than 60 years of age are more likely to be infected by the West Nile virus.

Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if you are sleeping outdoors.

In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord). Long trousers and sleeves are also an important way to cut down on possible exposure to mosquitoes.

"In recent years, when one human case occurs in an area, other cases often follow in the same part of the county", Fairfax officials said.

In 2017, 12 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus and two Iowans died.

"We urge those who are recreating outdoors to take common sense steps to prevent bug bites, including the use of mosquito repellents, along with wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts".

It is also recommended to help stop mosquitos from breeding by getting rid of standing pools of water in places like bird baths, wading pools and water bowls for pets.
