Perry Endorses Push to Impeach Rosenstein

The impeachment effort was led by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who talks to Trump frequently and often defends him to colleagues.

The introduction does not trigger an immediate vote, but Meadows and Jordan could make procedural moves on the House floor that could force a vote late this week or when the House returns from its upcoming five-week recess in September. The House is scheduled to leave Thursday for the five-week recess.

It's unclear whether there's support in the House to pass the impeachment resolution.

Still, some leaders could use the resolution as leverage.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress", Jordan said.

The group, led by Representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina, has criticized Rosenstein and Justice Department officials for not being responsive enough as House committees have requested documents related to the Russian Federation investigation and the closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails.

Meadows, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, tweeted that the Department of Justice has continued to hide information from Congress and repeatedly obstructed oversight.

The impeachment resolution also criticizes Rosenstein for refusing to produce a memo that outlines the scope of the investigation and questions whether the investigation was started on legitimate grounds.

Democrats counter that the real goal is to topple Rosenstein because he named Robert Mueller as special counsel and oversees his continuing inquiry into the Russian meddling and whether anyone around Trump conspired in it.

For his part, Mr. Rosenstein has thumbed his nose at the lawmakers. The lawmakers alleged bias at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and suggested the department has conspired against Trump - but many could draw the line at impeachment.

It has been argued by people that I respect that this resolution is merely the opening shot of a joint Congress-White House operation aimed at getting rid of Rosenstein for the goal of getting rid of Robert Mueller. "If you are looking for documents, then you want compliance, and you want whatever moves you toward compliance".

One top Republican, who asked not to be identified in order to discuss meetings with Ryan and other Republican leaders, said they haven't shown any inclination to formally punish Rosenstein. While we have acted in good faith and given DAG Rosenstein every opportunity to comply with Congressional requests, he has evaded our attempts to conduct oversight time and time again.

Leaving the meeting, Meadows said he still had "great frustration" that the Justice Department had not complied with congressional subpoenas, although he declined at that point to comment on the prospect of impeaching Rosenstein.

Justice Department officials, briefing reporters Wednesday on condition of anonymity, said the department has fully complied with two subpoenas from the House Intelligence Committee and met nearly all demands in a subpoena from the House Judiciary Committee. Observers have long characterized impeachment threats as a means to thwart the probe.

A Justice Department official said the agency had no comment. "This resolution to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein is a direct attack on the Special Counsel's investigation - full stop".

Democrats argue the move is little more than an attempt to damage the investigation into Trump's dealings.
