It won't be visible in the US, but can be seen in parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia - depending on the weather.

The long duration of this eclipse is partly due to the fact that the moon will make a near-central passage through Earth's umbra - the darkest, most central part of the shadow.

Dr Brown said: 'At this time, the moon passes into the shadow of the Earth, blocking the light from the sun.

The celestial event, where the moon will line up with the Earth and the sun, will be seen across the United Kingdom and other parts of the Eastern hemisphere.

The total eclipse was visible from Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean and western North America.

North America missed out on Friday's lunar eclipse but can look forward to the next one on January 21, 2019, according to NASA.

Mr Wullschleger said his image of the red moon above Brisbane City was taken about 20 minutes after the total eclipse began.

The areas in white indicate where the entire 103 minutes of the total lunar eclipse will be visible July 27. The total eclipse will last nearly one hour and 43 minutes.

According to NASA, the next lunar eclipse that is this long will occur in 2123.

On July 27 at around 10pm, the red planet Mars will be directly opposite to the Sun and at the same time being at closest distance from the Earth at about 56 million kilometres.

Before we had explanations before what causes the moon to appear red, ancient cultures often feared the worst.

Sadly, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you'll miss the lunar eclipse because it will take place during our daylight hours. This celestial event is on a much larger scale compared to the Blood Moon observed at the start of this year.

Thai stargazers will be staying up into the wee hours of Saturday to witness the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century, as a "super blood moon" dazzles the world. That's nearly as long as the longest lunar eclipse ever, which came in at an hour and 47 minutes.

Those in Australia's west, where alarms were set from 2am, got to see the end of the eclipse's totality, he said.

The eclipse, though, was not visible in America and the Pacific.

As the sunlight has to travel around Earth, if there is a lot of particulate matter in the air then it will encourage greater rates of refraction, making the moon appear red. Amateur astronomers will guide people about the eclipse. As a result, the Red Planet will rise at sunset and stay in the sky until sunrise.
