Trump's proposed Washington meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has been delayed until 2019.

National security adviser John Bolton said in a statement that Trump believed his next meeting with Putin should take place "after the Russian Federation witch hunt is over", a reference to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Russian officials had said they might be open to Trump and Putin meeting on the sidelines of an global summit such as the G-20, but they had not committed to a trip to Washington, D.C.

"NATO will remain an indispensable pillar of American national security", he said.

Lawmakers - and America's allies around the world - have been eager to learn the details of Trump's one-on-one July 16 meeting with Putin, including whether Trump made any secret promises to Putin or as-yet undisclosed verbal agreements.

But Pompeo went before lawmakers in his relatively new role as secretary of state on Wednesday and received a fierce tongue-lashing from both Republicans and Democrats for the administration's slapdash approach to foreign relations, from Russian Federation to North Korea and elsewhere.

Trump took heat for initially appearing to accept Putin's denial of meddling in the 2016 USA election.

The statement came as the USA announced that it has no intention of recognizing Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and will not drop its economic sanctions against Moscow until Crimea is returned to Kyiv's control. Pompeo said that what the Russians did was "deeply immoral" and that those responsible for the MH17 disaster should be held accountable.

Citing the 213 sanctions on Russian entities and individuals since the Trump administration assumed office, Pompeo said "with respect to Russia, this administration has been tougher than previous administrations, and I fully expect it will".

However, Mr Trump has previously suggested that USA opposition to Russia's annexation of Crimea could be reconsidered.

The Washington Post has poured cold water on a claim by MSNBC's Rachel Maddow that the Trump administration intentionally cut a question asked of Russian President Vladimir Putin last week in Helsinki.

"I really don't believe, Mr. Secretary, you know what happened during the president's two-plus hour conversation with President Putin, and I really don't know much more about the summit after sitting here for three hours than I did before", said New Jersey Sen.

Days after the appearance in Helsinki, Trump suggested he misspoke and had meant to say he did not "see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia" that was responsible for the election cyberattacks.
