Mr Raab told MPs he would be "going out to Brussels on Thursday striving very hard with our team to get the very best deal".

He again refused to deny the plans, saying: "If we have no deal, we want to make sure we're prepared at the border for the knock-on effects".

Sterling climbed as much as 0.4 per cent to US$1.3159, the highest level since July 17, after May said she will lead Brexit negotiations, relegating the Brexit Department headed by Dominic Raab.

Unveiling the plans in a white paper in the House of Commons, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab described it as "another key milestone in the UK's path to leaving the EU".

"Still, now that Theresa May has taken "personal control" of Brexit away from the Brexiteers, perhaps a positive outcome is possible", said the commentary.

Mr Hunt's trip to Berlin for talks with his German counterpart marks the start of a frenetic round of diplomatic activity for Theresa May's Government as the Prime Minister seeks to build support for her Brexit strategy.

Prime Minister Theresa May announced today she will take personal control of Brexit negotiations with the European Union, as time runs out to get a deal before Britain leaves the bloc in March.

As part of the proposal, the United Kingdom wants a common rulebook for human and animal medicine products so that manufacturers need to undergo only one series of tests in either market (the United Kingdom or EU).

The new Brexit Secretary has refused to deny claims that the Government is planning to stockpile food in case the United Kingdom is forced to leave the European Union without securing a deal with Brussels. Sir Amyas Morse, the auditor general, told lawmakers in April that the divorce payments will become legally binding as soon as the United Kingdom signs a Withdrawal Agreement.

Raab told the BBC on Sunday the withdrawal agreement could be reached by October if the bloc matched Britain's "energy, ambition and pragmatism".

"By publishing the white paper today, the government is providing further certainty to people, to businesses, here in the United Kingdom and indeed across the European Union", he told MPs.

"What we have got is the officials hitherto who have been informing and supporting the negotiation in once place, with a ministerial chain of command clearly set out".
