us intelligence officials have said Russia's efforts to undermine elections are continuing and now target the November 6 congressional races. Only this time the subject isn't Charlottesville or David Duke; it's America's national security.

"These actions are persistent".

On Capitol Hill, top Republican leaders said they were open to slapping fresh sanctions on Russian Federation, but they showed no sign of acting any time soon.

In his remarks, Coats said that the intelligence community continues to see efforts by Russian actors to manipulate US public opinion, including through the use of fake social media accounts.

Lawmakers from both parties have been sounding the alarm over fresh interference by Russian Federation as they push to fortify USA election infrastructure ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump called the notion an "interesting idea" during his press conference with Putin in Helsinki.

On Monday, Trump appeared to question the findings of US intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-South Carolina, said on Twitter that there is a "BIG discrepancy" between Trump's statement and warning by Coats. "I don't see how they will let this go forward".

But during his CBS chat on Wednesday, Trump went as far as saying he personally confronted Putin when they met in Helsinki.

As for his meeting with Putin on July 16, Trump said the U.S.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., warned the Senate might take the issue out of the president's hands.

Trump declined to dub the Russian leader a liar. "He cares more about himself than the nation and any of us who serve it". "Big results will come!"

The Kentucky Republican especially commended Trump's meeting with Putin given the establishment's resistance to any form of détente with Russian Federation.

"Female host: "When Trump says our relations are bad because of American foolishness and stupidity, he really smells like an agent of the Kremlin".

But even accepting Trump's explanation, it is inadequate. "We're taking steps, we're making bold reforms to try to fix this and make sure it never happens again because we take it seriously and because we recognise that our election systems are incredibly important and is certainly a cornerstone of our democracy", the presidential advisor said. There is no rush, the sanctions remain! I was interpreting what the president's intention was in stating the administration's policy. Didn't get very much play relatively speaking.

"The president is wrong", GOP Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who was one of his most vocal defenders in the wake of the Helsinki summit. I can imagine Trump meaning to say either thing.

In a follow-up tweet, Trump wrote that Russian Federation has agreed to help in delicate negotiations with North Korea.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the two presidents discussed the possibility for McFaul to be interviewed, but added that Trump had not yet made a commitment. She went on to say, "He does believe that they would target, certainly, [the] USA election".

Trump's tweets prompted a new round of criticism from Democrats, including Rep. Ted Lieu of California, who said that only Russian people appreciated Trump's joint news conference with Putin. "We're also living in a grown-up world", he said.

In Tuesday's remarks at the White House, Trump said he had misspoken when he appeared to accept Putin's denials in Helsinki that Russian Federation had interfered in the 2016 election.

"And I realized that there is a need for some clarification", Trump said.

On Tuesday, Trump asserted that he had misspoken by saying "would" instead of "wouldn't".

"I think there's a growing wave of alarm" in both parties, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal told AFP.

While Trump's position on Russian interference has shifted repeatedly in recent days, and fresh comments about North Atlantic Treaty Organisation cast doubt about the alliance's mutual defense premise, some in Trump's party signalled they had had enough with his wrecking ball diplomacy and sought to take steps to box him in.

"The president also sees this as an opportunity, as he said many times, to be able to work with Russian Federation".
