Just a day after Johnson's resignation, May appointed Jeremy Hunt, ex-health minister, as the country's new foreign secretary.

However, she has support from moderates and there has been no formal challenge to her leadership so far.

The government said Britain would act "as if in a combined customs territory" with the European Union, using technology at its border to determine whether goods from third countries were bound for Britain or the European Union, and charging the appropriate tariffs in those cases.

"It's a good thing that we have proposals on the table", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the Balkans summit in London. "The fact the eccentric Foreign Secretary [Johnson] followed him confirms the presence of serious problems in the Theresa May cabinet", he said.

Prime Minister Theresa May has insisted that the deal she forged at Chequers last week "delivers on the vote that people gave on Brexit" in the 2016 referendum.

"I do not think the public will believe that".

Speaking at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Mrs May repeated her assertion that the Chequers agreement delivered on her Brexit red lines - leaving the EU's single market and customs union.

One woman who saw the President arrive said he had given a "short speech" which she described as "lovely".

When asked whether May agreed with Trump's assessment, the spokesman said he hoped Trump would have a positive view of Britain after his visit which starts on Thursday.

In his resignation letter, he blamed the "dilution" of what he said was a firm Chequers agreement, delays to the White Paper, and omissions from the "backstop" customs proposal that would leave the United Kingdom in a "weak negotiating position at best".

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Ms Bishop is keen to continue Australia and the UK's strong relationship under replacement Jeremy Hunt, noting her achievements working with Mr Johnson in recent years.

European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that it is unfortunate that the whole "idea of Brexit has not left together with David Davis".

Concessions on regulations would be off the table because Britain needs to remain aligned with strict European Union safety and environmental rules.

After the hours-long meeting at Chequers, May seemed to have persuaded the most vocal Brexit campaigners in the cabinet, including Davis, to back her plan to press for "a free trade area for goods" with the European Union and maintain close trade ties.

"I welcome the resignations of Boris Johnson MP and David Davis MP from the Cabinet".

Pressure had been growing for months on the prime minister to reach a compromise on Brexit within her publicly divided cabinet in order to progress talks with the EU.
