Beryl loses hurricane strength as it maintains a course for the Caribbean

The next tropical storm of the season will be named Beryl. It is expected to remain at 75 mph through the next 24 hours, and they still believe it will dissipate after it passes Hispaniola on Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea. Forecasters believe that additional strengthening is in store for Chris, and the storm is expected to become a hurricane by mid-week. On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through early Sunday. The hurricane center had said the storm's extremely small size - hurricane-force winds extended only 10 miles from its center - makes its intensity hard to predict.

There's a new tropical depression in the central Atlantic, and it could strengthen and become Tropical Storm Beryl as soon as today.

The National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Two at 10 a.m. CDT Thursday.

Still, the storm is expected to impact some islands in the Caribbean even if it doesn't directly pass over them.

Many worry Beryl will cause power outages across Puerto Rico given the fragility of the US territory's electrical grid after Maria destroyed up to 75 percent of its distribution lines past year.

In Dominica, which was torn apart by Hurricane Maria last September, the government announced that a curfew and state of emergency will go into effect at 4 p.m. on Sunday. So for the 5 days, the storm poses no threats to the First Coast.

Tropical Storm Chris continues to spin just off the North Carolina coast and is now centered roughly 150 miles to the south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
