Users report that Samsung's default texting app, Samsung Messages, has been sending photos on the device to random contacts through MMS/SMS messaging. It only became apparent after the recipient alerted them.

The scariest part about this bug is that when Samsung Messages bugs out sends pics to other people, it reportedly doesn't leave any evidence of it doing so, which means people may not know their photos have been released into the wild until it's too late. Samsung is offering to double your memory so, for example, if you buy a 128GB Note 8 model you'll get a 128GB memory card as your freebie, while 64GB devices will come with a 64GB card.

Another referenced the self-immolation of Note 7s debacle by stating: "Give me a spontaneously exploding phone any day of the week, Samsung, instead of this nightmare scenario".

Samsung is now urging concerned customers to call its support lines directly.

The current theory seems to be that the bug is being caused by a recent RCS (Rich Communication Services) profile update that certain carriers - including T-Mobile - rolled out. £23pm We have to say that we love this Samsung Galaxy S8 tariff - at a time when S8 deals are falling all around, this one still somehow manages to stand out from the crowd. The Samsung Messages app doesn't show any sign of sending the photos, meaning the user is completely unaware of the picture messaging. However, T-Mobile told Gizmodo that the whole thing is "not a T-Mobile issue".

In a statement, a Samsung spokesperson said "We are aware of the reports regarding this matter and our technical teams are looking into it".

In the meantime, users can switch to another text messaging app, such as Google's Android Messages, or disable access to phone storage for the Samsung Messages app.
