Uruguay's Luis Suarez celebrates the second goal of his team during the group A match between Uruguay and Russia at the 2018 soccer World Cup at the Samara Arena in Samara, Russia, Monday, June 25, 2018.

Russian Federation had scored eight goals in sweeping victories over Saudi Arabia and Egypt and were already guaranteed to progress, but they went behind in their final group match after only 10 minutes when Luis Suarez drilled in a clever low free-kick.

Uruguay doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when Diego Laxalt's shot from the edge of the area deflected off Cheryshev, leaving Akinfeev wrong-footed.

Both Russia and Uruguay already secured places in the next Round of Last 16, each enjoying wins over opponents in their two previous group stage matches.

"The only plus is that we'll play at Luzhniki", Cherchesov said.

Uruguay, by contrast, are perfectly set-up to keep teams at arm's length and they had few problems during a second period that at times meandered to a procession, Edinson Cavani converting from close range in the final minute to complete a comfortable 3-0 victory. Ranked No. 14, La Celeste defeated Egypt 1-0 in its tournament opener and then had the same result against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

The score was opened by Uruguay on the 10th minute after Russian midfielder Yury Gazinsky was slapped with a yellow card for a tackle on Matias Vecino near the box of his goal, reported Tass news agency. A reported 15 million pints of beer were sold in pubs and other venues televising the game. Tomorrow's match will decide on the victor of their Group A, which also enrolls the teams from Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Russian Federation were a man down after Smolnikov collected two yellow cards in the span of 8 minutes.

The party continued inside the stadium as the fans flocked in and made an almighty racket, before Russia's positivity was punctured within 10 minutes by Luis Suarez.

Luis Suarez. Uruguay haven't looked terribly impressive at this World Cup but have managed to remain ideal in the group stages thanks to a miserly defence and the efforts of their talisman.

Because Russia had the advantage on goal difference from its first two group matches, it would have won the group with a draw.

Their struggles so far mean a shake-up in midfield is likely, with Sampdoria's Lucas Torreira a certain inclusion after impressing as a substitute against the Saudis. As a team we're thinking about what's best for the squad as that's what's most important.

The Three Lions have cruised to the knockout stages and captain Harry Kane is leading the scoring at the tournament so far with five goals, including a hat trick.
