The new baby has also gained attention from across the pond, receiving letters of love from world leaders, including the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who said they looked forward to meeting the new bub this year.

The name has Irish origins, and means in various forms "bright", "radiant" and "snow".

Te Aroha - a rural town in the Waikato region of Zew Zealand - was where Ardern's family was from, she explained.

"I thought 'how do I reflect the generosity, particularly of all the iwi who gifted us names?' and Te Aroha seemed to be a way".

Ardern's partner Clarke Gayford spent Thursday night with Ardern at the hospital.

"Te Aroha. was our way of reflecting the amount of love this baby has been shown before she even arrived", she said.

"Hopefully these things that in these moments now are.a novelty.one day they aren't new any more", Ardern said.

Little Neve made her debut while her beaming parents, Jacinda Arden and partner Clarke Gayford, greeted the media.

Pausing and looking to the ceiling of Auckland City Hospital, the Prime Minister said the moment was a blur of emotion.

In the video, Ardern takes a few minutes to tell the story behind their daughter's name, Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford, as well as to thank staff at the hospital.

"We've gone for simplicity, because Clarke with an "e" has caused all sorts of problems, and Jacinda with a "d", she said.

"But as equally special to us were just those people who took time to send a little note, or a blanket or a set of booties", Ms Ardern said.

"It's just something really lovely in a world where so much is unfair that we're all very excited about it", said Frances Gerbic, a music teacher living in Auckland.

Her partner, a 40-year-old television fishing personality, will be a stay-at-home dad while the prime minister will return to work after six weeks' maternity leave.

She has now become the first woman in the country's history to give birth while in office.

Ardern announced Neve's birth on her official Instagram account Thursday, saying the baby arrived at 4.45 pm local time, weighing 3.31 kilograms (7.3 pounds).

"So I hope for little girls and boys that actually there's a future where they can make choices about how they raise their family and what kind of career they have that is just based on what they want and it makes them happy". During her absence, Deputy Prime Minster Winston Peters will cover the day-to-day government operations.
