Late header brings victory for Uruguay against Egypt

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani each passed up opportunities to clinch the points against a Pharaohs side who kept Mohamed Salah on the bench, but it was centre-back Gimenez who proved the hero.

Salah, one of the best players in the world this season, was with the Egyptian players as they strolled on the pitch before the game in Yekaterinburg but it remains to be seen if he plays any part in the match as a substitute.

Egypt's national team head coach Hector Cuper also declared his confidence Salah would feature against Uruguay, saying he could assure reporters that it was near "100 per cent" that he would play.

Salah has been nursing a shoulder injury since his early exit from the Champions League final, the Liverpool forward having limped off following a clash with Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos.

If not - and it's most likely that Uruguay win - Egypt's match against Russian Federation will be enormous.

Egypt play Uruguay - tipped by some to be dark horses - in Yekaterinburg in just the second game of the tournament, following Russian Federation against Saudi Arabia in the opening match.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is under way.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was at a loss to explain how Luis Suarez missed three golden chances in his team's 1-0 win over Egypt in their opening World Cup game but refused to blame the striker.

Leheta said: "Salah participated in training with his team-mates for the entire session and he is ready to play against Russian Federation according to technical staff". "If we see at the last minute that there is an issue then we will see if it can be resolved, but certainly he does not feel afraid".

With its traditional defensive tactics preferred by Cuper, Egypt badly needs Salah and his goals to succeed.

Uruguay ran away as winners in their opener but would expect a better show from their attackers next when they go up against Saudi Arabia in their second game on Wednesday.

Cavani and Suarez didn't receive the support they needed and at times had to return to the middle of the field as playmakers, not a role for a duo which has combined for 93 worldwide goals.

"During this period, all the players observed Ramadan", Cuper said.
