Bipartisan Outrage Grows Over Immigration Policy Separating Children From Parents

Mr Trump blames the Democrats. "Be smart America!" he wrote. "This is something that transcends politics".

"It is inconsistent with our American values to separate these children from their parents", Ms Collins said on CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Jessica Vaughan, director of policy for the conservative-leaning Center of Immigration Studies, said Congress could come up with a new law allowing for family detentions to stop separation.

ProPublica has released a recording of children sobbing and wailing after being separated from their parents at the southern U.S. border. That includes many who are applying for asylum but crossed the border unlawfully before filing their claim. Mr Trump has derided that practice as "catch and release", arguing that numerous immigrants never appear for court proceedings.

The senator's bill would add more federal immigration judges, authorize new temporary shelters to house migrant families, speed the processing of asylum cases and require that families that cross the border illegally be kept together, absent criminal conduct or threats to the welfare of any children.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker cited the administration's "cruel and inhuman" policy separating children from their parents in reversing a decision to send a National Guard helicopter from his state to the Mexican border. And it is not helpful to the president achieving his goals on immigration reform Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from ME told Politico. "We will not apologize for the job we do, for the job law enforcement does and for the job the American people expect us to do".

After the photos came to light, including one of a two-year-old crying at the border, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen defended the policy. "Go for it! WIN!" Here are some of the contradictory excuses offered by the Trump team for a policy that is being increasingly criticized by Democrats and Republicans alike. She says, 'I promise I'll behave, but please get me out of here. "I don't want to try people".
