Robbie Williams causes a stir with middle-fingered salute at opening ceremony

Fans from all over the world witnessed a glitzy and glamorous affair at the opening event of the much awaited FIFA World Cup 2018.

Tomorrow Morocco's kick-off game against Iran will take place in the St. Petersburg Stadium at 3:00 p.m.

There was a dazzling on-pitch light show to accompany Williams and opera star Garifullina, with performers dressed in the colors of each of the 32 World Cup teams bopping to the music.

However, Williams couldn't resist a naughty gesture as the TV cameras zoomed in for a close-up, showing the world his middle finger.

The 2018 World Cup begins today, but while many are waiting for the games to begin, others are looking forward to the opening ceremony.

He said earlier that he was "happy and excited to be going back to Russian Federation for such a unique performance".

He added: "Football will conquer Russian Federation, and from Russian Federation, football will conquer the world".

The British singer and songwriter was performing one of his hit singles "Rock DJ", and could be heard saying "I did this for free" before flipping the camera off.

Football fans exploded on Twitter after noticing the ageing singer stick his middle finger up when leaving the pitch following a performance of his hit song Angels as part of Thursday afternoon's proceedings.
