A 100-acre wildfire in Colorado's Buffalo Mountain ignited Tuesday morning 2 miles west of Silverthorne, prompting hundreds of evacuations in that area.

All residents were allowed to return home starting at 3 p.m. Thursday.

These residences and businesses will remain under pre-evacuation orders, and residents will be subject to the limited opening hours of Highway 550, which will close at 8 p.m. today.

Residents needed to present ID to get back into their neighborhoods.

More burnouts are expected on the southwest perimeter of the fire near Junction Creek Road (County Road 204) in an effort to create a safe burn zone for the fire and eventually a containment line.

County Fire Marshal Keith Clark says the idea is to reduce the likelihood of a human-caused fire. The investigation was ongoing. No homes have been lost.

The SJNF covers 1.8 million acres within the Dolores Ranger District, the Columbine Ranger District, and the Pagosa Ranger District across nine counties in southwestern Colorado. "We're not out of the woods by any means, but we've been very fortunate there have not been any homes burned or firefighters hurt".

The fire in the Medicine Bow National Forest began Sunday about 2 miles north of the Colorado border.

The fire is burning in lodgepole pine and in an area of the forest that sustained heavy beetle kill in recent years.

When Kristy Vogt was placed on pre-evacuation notice, she took to her back yard grabbing a box of sidewalk chalk, and got to work. The 416 Fire's cause is still unknown.

"Weather is going to continue to play a role over the next few days, continuing to influence some of our decisions and the fire behavior", Jamie Knight, a 416 fire spokeswoman, told the Denver Post. According to the most recent report from the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team, the fire has consumed almost 30,000 acres and is only 15 percent contained.

Fire officials are more concerned that thunderstorms in the area could produce dry lightning and bring gusty winds of 40 miles per hour.

Evacuees are being asked to check in at the Harmony School off Wyoming Highway 230.

Voos said Highway 230 remains open, however visibility could be obscured at times due to smoke. This means that forest campgrounds, day use areas, roads, and trails will be closed, including wilderness areas, and that hiking, dispersed camping, and other recreational activities are prohibited.
