The findings point to the need to both prevent the circumstances associated with the onset of mental health conditions-such as relationship, financial or criminal problems-and support those with a known mental conditions to decrease the risk of suicide, the CDC said.

Suicide rates have risen between 1999 and 2006 in all USA states except Nevada, impacting women, men, children, and people of different ethnicity and race.

The report said people without known mental health problems were more likely to die by firearms than those with known mental health problems.

North Dakota had the highest increase, at almost 58 percent over the studied time period.

That, combined with state legislative support, federal grants through the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and relatively strict laws on gun ownership, have put CT in a relatively strong position to keep suicide deaths down, said Andrea Duarte of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' prevention division. "The widespread nature of the increase, in every state but one, really suggests that this is a national problem hitting most communities".

Leblanc says without the proper facilities and professionals to take care of Louisiana patients with mental illnesses, they often end up treating the symptoms of their disease at places that aren't equipped to handle them. However, Nevada had the ninth-highest suicide rate in the country. "Beginning a conversation, helping keep them safe, helping them connect and then follow up with them", she said. The same is true for those with mental health conditions, but at a much lower percentage of 69 percent and 41 percent respectively. "People are going to get help", Reidenberg said.

While the murder rate has fallen dramatically over the past four decades, suicide is on the rise, and the reasons are multiple.

More than half of the suicides in the CDC study happened without warning. Publicity surrounding a suicide has been repeatedly and definitively linked to a subsequent increase in suicide, especially among young people. "As a suicide researcher, you feel urgency to answer big questions because the field is stagnant, and people are dying at increasing rates".

Folks at the Crisis Center in Birmingham say whenever a public figure takes their life it can certainly cause others who may have been considering it to think about it even more. That age group also had the highest rate.
