At this weekend's Belmont Stakes on Long Island, the 150th anniversary of the NY race, Justify has the chance to join the exclusive stable of Triple Crown winners after triumphs at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes earlier this year.

Justify became the 13th Triple Crown victor and first since American Pharoah in 2015 in today's running of the 150th Belmont Stakes, held in NY before 90,000 horseracing fans.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victor American Pharoah wins the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes in NY on Saturday, June 6, to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affimred did so in 1978.

He's won more Triple Crown races, 15, than anyone else and became just the second trainer, after James "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, to win two Triple Crowns. Baffert won in 2015 with American Pharoah.

ELMONT, NY - JUNE 09: Justify #1, ridden by jockey Mike Smith leads the field to the finish line to win the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 9, 2018 in Elmont, New York.

'Justify's a freak, super horse, undefeated, awesome what he's done, ' Repole told DFR. "He's a remarkable horse to run in all three legs as well as he did". "He just came on there and broke every curse there was". The staff made special pizzas with Justify and Triple Crown spelled out in pepperoni.

He quickly decided that in nearly 40 years as a jockey, he'd never ridden a more gifted 3-year-old.

"The raw talent is there", Baffert said.

Justify will run from the rail after drawing the unfancied No. 1 post - one trainer Bob Baffert always likes to avoid - but it will take more than that to stop him.

When they won the first game of the series it looked like the tale of an expansion team and its city would soar to new levels. Marc-Andre Fleury, long one of the top goalies in the league, stopped 29 of 33 shots, making several acrobatic saves.

Both Justify and Restoring Hope were trained by Baffert, and the latter played a big role in Saturday's outcome by breaking out into second place and blocking other horses.

Restoring Hope, with jockey Florent Geroux up, appeared to run interference for the champion on Saturday while traveling second and forcing would-be challengers to go extremely wide.

Justify defied the hard post position along the rail, breaking well and taking the lead within seconds.

Smith got the big colt into a relaxed rhythm under a moderate pace heading into the backstretch, and he had an easy trip from there.

Justify will leave Belmont Park on Monday and go back to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., for at least a week before eventually returning to Baffert's home base in California. Justify pulled away down the 1,097-yard stretch in front of screaming fans with only 24-1 shot Gronkowski picking off a half-dozen rivals in taking up the chase down the lane. Vino Rosso made the most serious move to get within a length but never threatened.

"Everybody thinks I'm so opposed to Saratoga", he said.

Gronkowski, named for and partly owned by New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, returned $13.80 and $7.

Hofburg paid $3.70 to show.
