Porsche's first fully-electric vehicle will be called the Taycan, the company revealed on Friday.

Porsche first revealed the Mission E concept in 2015 at the International Auto Show in Frankfurt. And now it has a production name - Porsche Taycan (which we think is pronounced "Tie-Can").

According to a report from Reuters, Porsche made the announcement earlier today, with Porsche CEO Oliver Blume noting that "Taycan" means a lively and young horse, a creature which of course can be found on the Porsche logo. So now you know.

Porsche Taycan will be the name for the firm's first all-electric vehicle. With this setup, Porsche claims that the Taycan will complete a 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds and take just under 12 seconds for a 0-200 km/h speed run.

Porsche say you won't need to spend half an hour "conditioning" the Taycan to get that performance and, as long as you have juice to play with, the Taycan will keep on delivering its power.

With new so-called J1 architecture that will enable fast-charging to 80% in just 15 minutes, the Taycan will reach the market with one of the most high-tech powertrains used on an electric vehicle yet.

The vehicle had previously been known as the Mission E.

Second, driven in all-electric mode, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid shows that Porsche has managed to retain its race-bred chops in an EV, largely down to a compliant but communicative adaptive suspension and an impeccably weighted steering feel.

In February, Porsche's head of electric vehicles, Stefan Weckbach, said the Taycan will be able to sustain its performance better than the Model S. The electric sports vehicle is expected to go on sale at the end of 2019.

Porsche's original goal had been to spend three billion euro ($3.53bn) on electromobility by 2022.

Porsche has confirmed that the Mission E concept, in its production ready avatar, will be christened Taycan.

Zellmer adds that "over the next 10 years our strategy will reflect a mixture of models using internal combustion, plug-in and fully electric powertrains".

The Taycan is the start of a broader electrification strategy at Porsche. The engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors.
