Microsoft's work on open source has inspired the GitHub team.

No details remain thin on what the deal entails and what it could mean for Github's community of users.

This is big news as GitHub hosts the world's largest collection of code, with many developers using it as a repository for projects. In total, some 28 million developers use GitHub, with 85 million code repositories.

GitHub, based in San Francisco, has had its share of troubles over the past year. A considerable measure has changed from that point forward, and under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft is supporting numerous tastes of Linux and has utilized open-source models on some critical cloud and designer items. Wanstrath will be replaced as CEO by Nat Friedman, the former CEO of Xamarin, which Microsoft acquired in 2016. Microsoft is the top contributor to the site, and has more than 1,000 employees actively pushing code to repositories on GitHub according to The Verge. Wanstrath will join Microsoft as a technical fellow.

In the cryptocurrency world, GitHub plays a major role as it is the platform where the cryptocurrencies launch their TestNets; a mock version of their MainNets before the launch. One thing that will definitely happen if this acquisition goes through is GitHub's infrastructure moving to Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service. And Microsoft has been interested in GitHub for a few years. The free open-source operating system was once called a "cancer" and the single largest threat to Windows. It's worth noting that Microsoft does use GitHub, just like Google and other tech companies.

"Most importantly, we recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement", Nadella said. Furthermore, it has been looking for a new CEO for the last nine months. Microsoft says in its press release: "GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries". The acquisition is said to have started as a co-marketing initiative, which grew into a discussion of an investment from Microsoft, before ultimately transforming into an outright purchase.
