Apple’s WWDC 2018: What to Watch For

Apple kicks off its annual conference for developers on Monday at 10 a.m. Apple's virtual assistant Siri will also make suggestions for notification settings based on which alerts people act upon.

More than 6,000 developers from around the world are attending the five-day event.

The first public beta of iOS 12 will be available later this month, while the full version will be released later this autumn, most probably in September.

Using an iPhone 6S as an example, Apple said it will be 40% faster with the keyboard opening 50% faster and photos snapping 70% faster.

Apple is also planning an update to ARKit, its platform for developers to build augmented-reality experiences on iPhones and iPads, which it announced past year.

Apple also introduced a new app that uses a phone's camera to detect and measure real life objects. There is a new Shortcuts app to help you create all shortcuts involving various apps.

Siri: Apple's not-so-smart assistant has a lot of catching up to do to reach the level of the Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. You tap it, record a custom phrase, and then you can say it to Siri.

Group FaceTime makes it easy to chat with multiple people at the same time. All Animoji and Memoji now feature winks and tongue detection to capture even more expressions. New characters incoming include a ghost, koala, tiger and T-rex.

Apple is in the middle of presenting its WWDC 2018 keynote, and it's just announced the next major version of iOS is called iOS 12. You tap when you want to get your notifications back. You will also be woken up to a new screen that gives you a summary of your day.

This new feature shows you how much you use your phone.

To correct any issues, Apple has a companion app called "Screen Time", which establishes custom limits for overall phone usage, app usage, content, and time usage.

CarPlay is getting third-party navigation support.

Own an Apple TV? Apple is also planning an update to ARKit, its platform for developers to build augmented-reality experiences on iPhone and iPads, which it initially announced a year ago. The new OS' improved notification management will let users have notifications delivered quietly, turned off, or grouped together for clarity.

Voice Memos has been redesigned too and it's now available on the iPad. Bloomberg also adds there will be more integration between Apple's Mac and mobile operating systems announced during the keynote. It's also a chance for the world's most valuable tech company to lay out its vision for the future of the iPhone and consumer tech broadly.
