Asked about Trump's Thursday morning tweet, Lee told host John Berman that "my understanding at the time [Trump] did it was that he was concerned about the way that Mr. Comey had handled the Hillary Clinton investigation", falling back on the White House's initial talking point. Comey's firing is one part of Mueller's inquiries into whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation.

Oh for Pete's sake.

Trump has also said he did not fire McCabe over the ongoing investigation into whether his 2016 presidential campaign was involved any Russian interference or cooperation to help sway the outcome of the election.

Though Trump did not cite a reason for Comey's firing in that tweet, the implication is that Comey's poor character justified his termination. "The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!"

Trump's latest comments on Comey follow The New York Times' reporting on Wednesday that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe had turned over a memo to the special counsel's office that was drafted shortly after Comey was sacked back in 2017. "I am a big fan of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I love the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Many news organisations have covered Trump's claims, including the one when a "spy" was embedded by the law enforcement into the U.S. president's campaign in 2016, as per the report. According to the McCabe memo, which was first reported by the New York Times, Rosenstein claimed that Trump wanted him to mention the Russian Federation investigation in this official rebuke.

"I've talked with Director Mueller about this", Rosenstein said in an interview with The Associated Press a year ago.

Trump and aides also criticized Comey by saying that the FBI director privately told the president he was not the subject of investigation, but would not say that publicly.

Wikileaks posted an email Kadzik, then a DOJ official, sent to Podesta, the chair of Clinton's campaign, in May 2015, flagging an upcoming hearing where a DOJ official would be testifying and was "likely to get questions on State Department emails". That's on top of the $6.7 million spent on the probe the previous four months. The office has also spent about $750,000 on travel, almost all of which went toward temporary duty costs for Justice Department employees on loan to the Mueller investigation. As of 2018, US attorney salaries were capped at a little over $164,000, according to the department's pay scale.
