'Come to Russia': Moscow invites North Korea's Kim to visit

Kim was quoted as saying, "DPRK's will for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula still remains unchanged and consistent and fixed". But North Korea flipped on the U.S. in May, blasting Trump officials and saying it was reconsidering the summit.

There is a chance that former spy chief Kim may head to Washington later Thursday or Friday to personally deliver the letter, if the talks with Pompeo went well.

"We are doing very well with North Korea", Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing on a trip to Texas. "The meetings have been very positive".

"But I think it'll get done in a very smart, organised fashion and I think that Kim Jong Un wants to see it also".

With the meetings in NY concluding, Kim Yong-chul will now travel to Washington to deliver a letter to President Trump Friday from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump's letter, the aides said, was created to pressure the North on the global stage for appearing to have cold feet.

The American leader later cancelled the 12 June summit before backtracking shortly before the North and South Korean leaders met again for a second time and agreed to resume talks between the two countries.

Trump's comments came as Pompeo had another day of meetings in New York City with Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean vice chairman of the central committee of the ruling Workers' Party, and a delegation from Pyongyang ahead of the potential summit in Singapore.

Later, aboard Air Force One, Trump told Reuters that it might take more than one meeting to seal a denuclearisation deal and that he would like North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons programme as quickly as possible under any agreement.

North Korea has rejected previous United States calls for its unilateral nuclear disarmament and argued instead for a "phased" approach to the denuclearization of the entire Korean peninsula, which in the past has also meant removal of the U.S. nuclear umbrella protecting South Korea and Japan. "Hopefully, we will have a meeting on the (June) 12th", Trump said, adding there may be multiple meetings but "maybe we'll have none".

"The conversation is going to be focused on denuclearization of the peninsula", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday in her daily briefing.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the worldwide legitimacy a summit with Trump would provide.

The report also said Kim and Lavrov agreed to boost exchanges and cooperation between North Korea and Russian Federation, with the two agreeing on a bilateral summit this year.

Trump cancelled a highly-anticipated summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore last week, blaming "tremendous anger and open hostility" from North Korea.

Kim has rejected previous United States calls for North Korea's unilateral nuclear disarmament and argued instead for a "phased" approach to denuclearisation of the entire Korean peninsula. "A nuclear-capable North Korea with missiles that can reach the United States is unacceptable".

During his tenure as a senior intelligence official, Kim was accused by South Korea of masterminding deadly attacks on a South Korean warship and an island in 2010. Trump hosted South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week.
