Gowdy: Sessions Should Have Shared Reason for Recusal with Trump

The president said last week the use of an informant could be "one of the biggest political scandals in US history".

Very early into the Trump presidency, Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russian election interference and the Trump campaign.

Trump has been angry at Sessions for failing to protect him from the DOJ investigation into any links between his presidential campaign and Russian officials, who worked to get Trump elected. A Fox News guest, commentator and anchor all rebuked claims from the president and his allies that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted a "spy" in his campaign in an effort to undercut his candidacy.

Rep. Trey Gowdy is "fairly persuasive" with his comments that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had an obligation to investigate Russian activities during the 2016 election, but assurances still need to be made that having an informant contacting people in President Donald Trump's campaign wasn't done for political reasons, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Wednesday.

"Given this freaky timeline of behavior by Trump, it's hard to conclude that Trump doesn't want Sessions to improperly impede the Mueller investigation, which is strong evidence that Trump wanted to impede the investigation when he fired Comey", Mariotti concluded.

"There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!"

In Gowdy's interview with Fox News, the outgoing congressman called on the president to sit down for an interview with Mueller.

On Fox News on Tuesday and then on CBS on Wednesday, Gowdy sought to put Trump's views into the context of the president's perspective: Trump told then-FBI Director James Comey, according to Comey's memos, that he hadn't done anything wrong but that if any of his staff members had, he wanted the FBI to find out. The CNN host explained that the FBI's goal was to run down a claim made by former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, who had bragged to an Australian diplomat about Russia's possession of dirt on Hillary Clinton. "I've never met or talked to the president".

"There's nothing to support that claim, and neither or the president nor the white house has offered anything to support that claim", Smith said, quoting Trump's Tuesday morning tweet.

Sessions recused himself past year from overseeing the Russian Federation probe, citing his role on Trump's campaign as a conflict of interest.

"Whenever you get any kind of an informer anywhere near a campaign, there has to be an assurance that it was not political or partisan in nature", Dershowitz said. "The president was." He added that unless a report on what the informant learned is turned over to Trump, "there's surely not going to be an interview".
