Iran FM Sets Out on Diplomatic Tour to Save Nuclear Deal

The US will re-impose the nuclear-related sanctions on Iran's economy and oil exports, which were waived under the JCPOA.

The deal between Iran and six world powers lifted most worldwide sanctions in 2016 in return for Tehran curbing its nuclear programme, under strict surveillance by the United Nations, to stockpile enriched uranium for a possible atomic bomb. "I think it is quite possible", he said in response to a question on the matter. "It depends on the conduct of other governments".

That being said this possibility seems very remote after the United States withdrawal from the nuclear deal. He called for the creation of a body to monitor the implementation of European Union sanctions rules.

"The sanctions regime that is in place now is very clear on what the requirements are", Pompeo said on Fox News Sunday.

Beijing has expressed regret over Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement and says it remains committed to the pact.

"The removal of sanctions under the deal has already produced disastrous results", he said.

The EU's executive arm, the European Commission, has been examining measures to counter the introduction of any United States sanctions that might harm European businesses and is expected to unveil them to EU leaders at a meeting in Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Some European leaders have called for measures to nullify the USA sanctions.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said Friday on Europe-1 radio that Europe should not accept that the the "world's economic policeman".

These reported remarks come as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif embarked on a diplomatic tour to try and save the nuclear deal.

President Trump's withdrawal from the multi-national deal to halt Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions has drawn little reaction from the tanker market.

In an apparent response to Zarif's tweet, Trump hit back Saturday evening, saying that the accord had failed to contain Iran's militarism.

"Why would any business, why would the shareholders of any business, want to do business with the world's central banker of global terrorism?" If they're going to see that it's not in their interest to stay in the deal; we're going to have to watch what the Iranians do. New business deals have been immediately barred.

"Major reasons for the United States withdrawal from the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program are not linked to the agreement itself, but to Washington's approach to Tehran's policy in the Middle East, he said". He spoke hopefully in Beijing on Sunday, alongside Chinese officials.

"She said it is in both the United Kingdom and Iran's national security interests to maintain the deal and welcomed President Rouhani's public commitment to abide by its terms, adding that it is essential that Iran continues to meet its obligations", a United Kingdom government spokesperson said in a statement.

Iran has said it would remain in the JCPOA for now, pending negotiations with the other signatories in the coming weeks before making a final decision on its future role in the agreement. The US Treasury announced on Tuesday more sanctions on officials of the Iranian central bank, including Governor Valiollah Seif, for allegedly moving millions of dollars on behalf of the country's Revolutionary Guards Corps to Lebanon's Hezbollah group.
