A similar system is already used in the US, and made headlines earlier this year when an emergency official in Hawaii mistakenly sent an alert about a potential incoming ballistic missile. The rest of the country, except Nunavut, will receive test alerts on May 9.

Another test is scheduled for Ontario on September 18, but will only see alerts broadcast via television and radio.

Canadians may be required to acknowledge receipt of the emergency alert in order to allow for their wireless device to resume normal functioning.

"Imagine sitting down at the table (Wednesday) night, if the test goes well, and saying to your high school students in your family or your young university students in your family and say, 'Hey, did your phone fire off?"

Depending on the settings, users with compatible devices connected to LTE networks, you'll hear a sound similar to a signal of an ambulance, or will feel the vibration for eight seconds.

The alert will go off in events like, tornadoes, floods, amber alerts or terrorist threats. Talked a lot about it in the beginning of this year, when the security officer at the Hawaii by mistake sent out a warning about the possibility of fall of the ballistic missiles.

According to a CRTC official, "safeguards are in place" to stop that happening in Canada.

Unlike wireless emergency alerts issued in the U.S., Canada's system requires a specific vibration cadence, alert tone and banner to notify users of an emergency.
