Kim Jong-un, left, meet the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, in Dalian.

Trump and Xi agreed on the importance of continued implementation of sanctions on North Korea until it permanently dismantles its nuclear and missile programs, the White House said.

He said the relevant sides would take phased and synchronous measures in a responsible manner so as to comprehensively advance the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue and eventually achieve denuclearisation and lasting peace on the peninsula, the report said.

North Korea 's official KCNA news agency said Xi and Kim "exchanged warm greetings, unable to hold back joy at meeting again".

"Last Thursday-Friday's talk was too demanding and China probably won't accept all the lists as given, but there are a lot of places where both countries can talk more, for example in terms of market access, IP protection, trade practices and more importantly Made in China 2025", Liu Li-gang, chief China economist at Citigroup Inc., said in a Bloomberg Television interview from Hong Kong.

The talks come amid a flurry of diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula, including a landmark summit in late April between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The top leaders of China and North Korea have had a second meeting, close on the heels of their first summit from March 25-28.

"After the first meeting between me and Comrade Chairman (Kim), both China-DPRK relations and the Korean peninsula situation have made positive progress". South Korea's Blue House also had to dispatch its national security adviser Chung Eui-Yong to the United States, who then met with his US counterpart, John Bolton, on May 4 and publicly rejected the talk of a possible reduction of USA troops.

The secretive talks were only unveiled after their conclusion earlier in the day, as was the case when Kim took an unannounced train to Beijing in late March for his first ever trip overseas since rising to power in 2011.

Trump has said that withdrawing USA forces from South Korea is "not on the table".

Intense secrecy typically surrounds high-level North Korean visits to China, and this week's trip was no different.

Although there were no guarantees that the American prisoners would be freed during Pompeo's visit, United States officials said their release would be a significant goodwill gesture ahead of the Trump-Kim summit that is expected later this month or in early June.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK had shown images of two North Korean aircraft taxiing at Dalian's airport, one an Air Koryo plane and another carrying a North Korean emblem.

Chinese internet users posting on social media described heavy security in the city and extensive flight delays on Monday.
