Ingram will be eligible to return to the Saints on Monday, October 1. The suspension could prove even more costly if he was angling for a lucrative contract extension before the season kicked off. With Ingram out for four weeks, that means that brunt of the rushing load will likely fall on Alvin Kamara, who was named the NFL's 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year last season. Ingram and Kamara made league history in 2017 by becoming the first backfield teammates to each surpass 1,500 yards from scrimmage.

The veteran has topped 1,000 yards rushing in each of the last two seasons and has scored 22 total touchdowns in that time. His finest campaign came previous year, when Ingram and rookie Alvin Kamara became the first backfield tandem to each eclipse the 1,500-yard mark with scrimmage yards. The suspension has also forced the Saints, who have a desire to feature Kamara more and more prominently in the offense, to scale back any trade intentions for Ingram. So that competition will be worth monitoring this summer. But with Ingram out of the lineup to start the season, New Orleans will rely heavily on Kamara to carry the load, as the only other running backs on the roster right now are rookie sixth-round pick Boston Scott, Trey Edmunds, Jonathan Williams and Daniel Lasco. He has rushed for 5,362 yards and 44 touchdowns while adding 207 catches and four more scores.
